The ABCs of Joining a Gym

wellness

Working out at the gym can be intimidating and scary for those of us who haven’t stepped foot in one since high school. We’re here to take the fear and mystique out of trying it again with some suggestions and tips to ease our minds and face the challenge with confidence.

The next step (no pun intended) is to find a space to be active. Whether walking the halls in the Centre, or hitting the gym at Fit4Less you don’t have to break the bank to add movement into your day.

If you’re looking to try out a gym, Fit4Less is a budget-friendly option with various equipment and perks. It’s a clean, 24/7 facility and during the daytime, there is staff on-site for tours, so you can ask questions and explore all that they have to offer. There are two types of membership, starting as low as $7.99 bi-weekly, and you can cancel with 30 days' notice.

When it comes to getting your sweat on there is a long list of equipment to explore for any experience level:

  • Two racks of dumbbells; up to 75lbs and up to 100 lbs (depending on membership)

  • Elliptical machines; 3 types (mobility varies depending on the height of a person)

  • Stationary bikes; 3 types

  • StairMaster; 2 types

  • Cable machines

  • Rowing machine

  • Treadmills

  • Bench presses

  • 30-minute express circuit

  • TRX bands

  • Squat racks

  • Medicine balls

  • Stretching bench

  • FUNctional workout area

  • …and more!

Although there aren’t personal trainers on-site, every machine has instructions and photos of muscle groups that are being worked on. If you want to test out specific equipment the last Thursday of every month is open for free drop-ins.

Especially when it comes to getting more comfortable and into a routine, it’s not always about lifting heavier weights but living a healthy lifestyle and building longevity, enhancing your day-to-day mobility and preventing injury. For a cool down, you can calm those nerve endings and choose from stretching in the FUNctional room or opt for a hydro-massage and or a seat in one of the massage chairs to lessen tension and help relax.
