Ghosts and witches, ghouls and goblins, Halloween is a celebration of all things frighteningly fun and brings out the kid in us all. Whether you love to dress in costume to the nines or someone who just wants to watch a scary movie in the dark, we all seem to enjoy the day in one way or another. Kids are the biggest fans of course and although their Halloween experience this year will likely not be what they are used to, there is so much that you can do as a family to make the day as exciting and spooky as possible. Here are a few suggestions to suit every level of horror and delight.

Costumes

Costumes allow us all to become someone else for one day and be goofy at the same time. The downside is that they are often cumbersome and uncomfortable to wear for long periods, especially if you’re on the go. Why not pick from one of the many onesie-style outfits available? Be a unicorn or panda, or even a chocolate bar. The beauty of this is that you are guaranteed to be cozy and these pieces don’t have to be shelved until next year, who wouldn’t want to be a unicorn every weekend?

Decor

We would normally decorate the exterior of our homes to entice the little trick or treaters but let’s bring in some of those this year and create a truly haunted mansion inside.

Lighting is probably one of the easiest and inexpensive decorating tools to transform any room. Blacklight bulbs are one alternative or you can go for something a little more “shocking” like a Plasma Globe, sending electric vibes throughout the room. Or throw on a sweet pumpkin necklace and be a wandering light throughout the house.

White bedsheets can cover the table or furniture giving it that vacant haunted house look. Plus, it keeps those sticky hands that have been dipping into the candies from getting all over the good stuff. Grab a handful of leaves and twigs from outside now and they can be tossed on the table for colour and texture when you are ready. Numerous candles will set the mood, battery-operated if you have little ones around.

Time for fun!

There are so many activities that will keep even the diehard trick or treaters happy to stay in this year. Here are a few suggestions that can be tailored just for your crew.

Scavenger Hunt

Young and old would get a kick out of a scavenger hunt, inside the house or in your yard or neighbourhood. Google is your friend here, an easy search offers tons of age-appropriate options to choose from and minimal work for you. A little treat at each found clue will satisfy the sweet tooth monsters.

Games

Hocus Pocus - The Game
Ages 8 and up will love working together to save Salem’s children from the evil Sanderson sisters. Watch the movie then play the game.

13 Dead End Drive
Play and find out who out of the 12 motley members of Aunt Agatha’s crew will inherit her fortune. Ages 8 plus.

Trivial Pursuit, Ultimate Horror Edition
Once the kiddies are asleep the older family members and friends will enjoy this Horror Edition of Trivial Pursuit. Or will they? Ages 17 plus.

Exit, The Game - The Enchanted Forest
If solving clues to save your life sounds thrilling to you, Exit, The Game has a series of escape room-type games. What started as a pleasant walk in the woods takes a bad turn and you have to solve it. Ages 10 plus.
Movies

End the evening by watching a classic Halloween movie. Sunrise Records and London Drugs carry a great selection to choose from or plenty are available to stream from various platforms such as Netflix, Crave, and Apple TV.  Here is a list of our Family-friendly favourites.
