Traditional Indigenous Beading Studio Pop Up with Teekca's Boutique
communityToday we celebrate National Indigenous Peoples Day 2022! We would like to first acknowledge and respect that St. Vital Centre is located on Treaty 1 territory; the ancestorial lands of Anishinaabeg, Cree, Oji-Cree, Dakota, and Dene peoples and the homeland of the Métis Nation. This day offers us the opportunity to learn about the history and rich, diverse culture of Canada’s, and especially Manitoba’s, First Nations, Inuit, and Métis peoples.
The summer solstice has always been an important time for Indigenous peoples to celebrate and share their culture, heritage and history. An important component of these celebrations has been the display of arts and crafts distinctive to their cultures. One treasured and renowned form is beading, the now colourful and intricate designs we see on so many items, from art pieces to clothing and footwear to jewelry. This skill has been passed down and treasured from generation to generation and more people across the globe are taking notice.
In celebration of National Indigenous Peoples Day and National Indigenous Month, St. Vital Centre has partnered with Teecka’s Boutique to offer a traditional beading workshop Pop Up on Saturday, June 25. For the workshop participants will be guided through the steps in making a pair of their own beautiful beaded earrings. There will be two time slots to choose from, 1 pm or 2 pm, and space is limited. Both options will take place at St. Vital Centre and you will have the opportunity to learn some of the basic skills of beading. Each session lasts between 30 minutes and one hour and all the supplies you need will be provided.
Tickets are available for purchase at Teekca’s Boutique near the Food Hall and Indigo for $25 each. The ticket price includes workshop materials, instruction, and a $10 donation to Drag the Red, a community volunteer organization addressing the issue of missing and murdered Indigenous women and girls in the Winnipeg Red River area.
For more information or to register for a workshop please contact Teekca’s Boutique, Customer Service or visit https://www.stvitalcentre.com/pages/svc-studio-pop-up.
