How to wear fall’s 4 hottest denim trends
fashionDenim never goes out of style, we see it season after season. We asked stylist Allana Schmidt of F2SE.ca why that is and she broke it down to two key reasons. “One – denim looks good on everyone, and two – it comes in every piece of clothing imaginable, from skirts to tops, to jeans of course, jackets, even bags! Because of its versatility, it will never be too far from our closets.”
Since we’re always looking for ways to update our classic blues, we browsed the Centre stores to see what’s new. This fall, denim trends are hotter than ever! Here are four of our favourites and some ideas on how to incorporate them into your everyday wardrobe.
Fall trend: acid wash skinnies
Yup, acid wash is back! We were a little skeptical but fashion has always been cyclical - it’s just a matter of keeping it fresh. Schmidt recommends pairing acid-wash jeans in a skinny style with more conservative or dressy toppers, like this animal print cardigan, to keep it from veering into 80’s territory (and work-friendly!). Keep your accessories modern with streamlined designs and pops of current colours.
Fall trend: denim on denim
The Canadian tuxedo is back and it’s chicer than ever. The key is really keeping a strong contrast amongst the denim shades, tones, and textures. A lighter chambray button-down on top with darker denim bottoms breaks up the denim overload, so reach for different washes when putting your head-to-toe denim look together. We love dressing up this look with a pair of show-stopping floral heels.
Fall trend: denim jacket
We’ve always got some sort of denim jacket in our closet, since it really does go with everything. We especially love this ‘of-the-moment’ moto silhouette with mixed materials in the leather arms. It brings a tough girl vibe to the sweet girlish lace and tulle details of the party dress. In jacket form, a conservative denim blazer is also a wardrobe workhorse and completely office appropriate, not just for casual Fridays. “As long as the denim piece mimics a typical office style piece, you're good to go!” says Schmidt.
Fall trend: distressed
According to Schmidt, distressed denim is normally more of a spring/summer trend, but we’re definitely seeing a comeback for fall. Pair laid-back ripped denim with other casual pieces like these easy slip on shoes and draped jacket. Think relaxed, but not sloppy. We’ll definitely be wearing this look out for weekend brunch on those transitional fall days.
