Basics may not seem as glamorous as bold statement pieces, but they are the foundation of a versatile, stylish wardrobe. The key is knowing how to style them – and smart accessorizing can go a long way. To show you how to keep your basics in not-so-basic territory, we visited Reitmans – one of our favourite places to snap up classic pieces – and styled three staples that every gal should have in her wardrobe.

Basic: The striped button-up

If you work in an office, a striped button-up is a definite must-have. Instead of pairing it with predictable black or beige trousers, reach for a trendier bottom, like these plaid, cropped pants. Mixing plaid and stripes is a pro-move that ups your fashion-forward appeal, and the blazer anchors the whole look and keeps it feeling office-appropriate. Oxfords are having a moment right now, and we’re loving this deep maroon pair for fall. Outside the office, you could totally rock this button-up with jeans and a stack of bracelets.

Basic: The longline vest

Fall fashion is all about layering, and a longline vest is a great piece to work with this season. Vests add depth and interest to an outfit without completely covering the other pieces, and this beautiful cream colour is begging to be paired with this bright tangerine dress. Since the beauty of this combination comes down to the palette, a yellow clutch really takes the look to the next level. For a more laidback approach, pair the vest with black leggings and a long tee.

Basic: The black dress

Oh, the little black dress. You probably have ten in your closet already, and we don’t blame you! This basic can be worn a million different ways, and that’s exactly why we love it. Our favourite way to dress down a LBD is to throw on a denim jean jacket and a trendy bandana for a pop of colour and added cool-factor. Be bold with your bandana choice, since black pairs well with anything. You could also top this staple with heels and a leather jacket if you’re looking for a quick going-out outfit.
