One Piece, Two Ways: The Down-Filled Vest

fashion

With cooler temps headed our way, it never hurts to stock up on cozy pieces. Our go-to option? The down-filled vest. We know… it definitely feels like more of a cold weather staple than a fashionable piece, but not only will it keep you warm when that wind kicks in, it screams off-duty chic when styled correctly. “Vests are a versatile way to add warmth without adding bulk,” says Spark stylist, Casey Downes. “They've made a major fashion comeback, and a Canada Goose vest is the perfect Canadian-girl version.” We must say, we totally agree!

Here are two stylish ways to wear this versatile piece:

Friday night @ The Pint: Although a vest is sleeveless, you'd be surprised how warm it will keep you. So don't be afraid to break out your favourite skirt while you still can! The vest will keep your core toasty warm, while the button-front skirt and knee-high boots elevate the vest into something more nighttime appropriate. A plaid blanket scarf is a must for this look - it adds an additional cozy layer, plus pattern, colour, and a nice juxtaposition in texture. And don't forget to accessorize! A burgundy purse and gold jewellery are chic touches that pull everything together.

Sunday brunch @ earls St. Vital: For a casual daytime outfit, we paired the vest with a denim button-up layered over a plaid button-up, classic blue jeans, and muted grey accessories. The cool tones are ultra-flattering, and the casual denim and plaid layers add to the overall laid-back feel. Plus, if you haven't already noticed, denim is HUGE this season. If you're easily overwhelmed by jeans shopping, Casey suggests choosing a medium-rise to high-rise pair to flatter your figure. “Another good rule of thumb is to choose a darker wash than your denim button-up,” says Casey. While the outfit just slays in general, the muted grey accessories and utilitarian-meets-feminine boots ensure that you'll be the chicest (and comfiest!) one at the table.
