Watch: 2 Ways to Wear a Scarf in Your Hair

video

We’ve all seen photos of anyone from Jackie O. to Queen Bey with a scarf tied so casually around her head, laughing in the summer breeze and looking impossibly stylish. But… have you ever actually tried tying a scarf in your hair? We have, and let’s just say it did not look like we were about to board Beyoncé’s yacht. Luckily, we have a secret weapon, and his name is Justin: our hair stylist taught us 2 ways to pull off a summer hair scarf, without breaking a sweat.

A scarf is a great way to do something with your hair that feels a little special; it’s also a great option when you’ve been playing in the water and sand all day or haven't washed your hair for an entire extra-long weekend. These 2 totally doable looks cover both ends of the spectrum.

Scarf look 1: Twist it into a headband
The headband scarf uses a super simple twist technique to create an end result that looks a lot more complicated than it really is. This style will keep your hair out of your face and cover up your less-than-clean roots – apply a little dry shampoo before you get started to give your hair some lift and texture that will help the scarf to stay in place.

The exact method you follow here will depend a little bit on your hair type and your scarf: if your hair has a little more texture or volume, you might not need a lot of reinforcement, whereas if you have super smooth and slippery hair like Jenna’s, pins will be a major necessity. If your scarf is super long, you might be able to tie the ends at the base of your head or off to one side instead of tucking them in. The key is to nail the twist, then explore your options from there.

Scarf look 2: Weave it into your braid
Our second style to try is about adding something special to an otherwise everyday look. A simple braid to one side gets an upgrade when you weave in a scarf, and as long as you know how to braid, it truly couldn’t be easier to achieve. Again, the exact method can vary based on your hair type – if you have thicker hair, you might want to section your hair into two pieces and use both ends of the scarf as the third piece. Ribbon is another pretty accessory to play around with to add some interest and fun to simple hairstyles.

Along with stubbornly attempting the hair scarf every summer, we also refuse to not do florals for spring, cliché or not. Like anything else, floral prints and how we wear them trends differently from year to year though – here’s how we’ll be wearing floral print in 2019.
