Hollywood’s It Shade: Periwinkle gets its star turn

fashion

It’s Sarah Jessica Parker’s favourite colour. Jessica Chastain and Reese Witherspoon have dazzled the fashion critics wearing the shade. And this spring, periwinkle — that electrified shade of peacock blue — is ruling the racks in shops and boutiques everywhere.

“It’s a colour that works well on a lot of skin tones,” says stylist and fashion director, Allana Schmidt. “It’s a bold, striking colour that isn’t too loud or girly.”

In its more subtle, mauve form, this misunderstood hue is a favourite for tulle-wrapped bridesmaids. But this spring’s on-trend periwinkle is a more saturated jolt of colour popular for pants, dresses and tops. Before you go head-to-toe on us, remember that all-over periwinkle, like many bold shades, may be overload. As Schmidt says, “You can stand out in the crowd without looking as though you put too much effort into your outfit.”

Instead, choose one periwinkle piece, like these tailored pants from Ricki's, to mix with neutrals. Or, use the shade as an accent colour in a print. This adorable button-up from Smart Set is one of our faves. Slip on a hefty silver ring with a periwinkle-toned gem or a bunch of blue bangles to create an instant cuff — we found these at Le Chateau. You can also add a dash of periwinkle at your toes with a pair of sky-high heels in this of-the-moment hue, like this fabulous pair we spotted at Aldo.

Whatever your age or style, don’t be afraid to embrace the blue! Hey, if it works for SJP - it works for us.
