The Turtleneck: 2 Edgy Ways to Rock this Classic Style

fashion

Lately, we’ve been all about breaking fashion rules and finding new ways to spice up classic pieces. And much to our surprise, the turtleneck is up next on our wishlist. We’re seeing it pop up all over the runways, and even caught Emily Ratajkowski wearing one during NYFW. “A turtleneck is a great way to extend your summer wardrobe into fall,” says Spark stylist, Casey Downes. “It can be layered under a multitude of outfits to add more coverage and class.” When done right, a turtleneck looks equal parts daring and sophisticated, plus makes sure you stay warm as temperatures drop. Those were reasons enough for us to scour the Centre for two ways to put an edgy spin on the classic ‘conservative’ turtleneck.

Here’s what we came up with:

Turtleneck + leggings + long-line vest:

This look embodies fashionable power-dressing, and is all about structure, texture, and long lines. “If you’re just dipping your toes into the trend, it's best to start with a black or charcoal grey turtleneck,” explains Downes. “Dark colours are the most versatile, so you’ll get the most bang for your buck.” She paired this simple charcoal version with thick leggings and a leather zip-front dress, which here doubles as a vest. The subdued colour palette and mix of different textures feels bold and confident. Leather gives an unexpected edge that is perfect for fall, and the neutral palette is a prime chance to rock a bold lip. Take the office by storm, or take this hot look out – this one would work equally well for a concert or dinner date.

Turtleneck + bright dress + minimal accessories:

Layering a turtleneck under a sleeveless dress equals instant cool-factor, and is a great way to gently transition out of summer mode. “Adding a turtleneck makes the transition to more coverage feel deliberate and more fashion-forward than just throwing on a cardigan,” says Downes. She recommends avoiding turtlenecks with a lot of extra fabric at the neck for this trick, as that can take the look from polished to frumpy. If you think bright purple is daunting, you gotta trust us here – it’s modern, glam, and everything you need to breathe some life into your fall wardrobe. “Contrasting a black turtleneck with the plum dress really makes the colour of the dress pop,” says Downes. “Keep the accessories minimal to let the dress shine.” A hint of silver makes for the perfect finishing touch.
