How to Dress For Winter’s Coolest Events

fashion

There’s no denying that Winnipeg knows how to do winter right. From dining on the frozen river at RAW:almond to partying voyageur style at Festival, there’s no shortage of ways to embrace winter around here. For those of you who prefer to avoid the cold, we promise that you won’t even feel it if you wear the right pieces. Below are three events that we can’t wait to check out – and what we plan on wearing to each one!

Jets Game
Nothing beats a night out cheering on the Jets at the MTS Centre – especially when our boys win! Winnipeg fans have a reputation for showing up and making noise in white and blue, and we’re all for flaunting your team colours and your style at the same time. A hat-and-scarf combo is a great way of repping the team, and these pieces can easily be mixed and matched with your regular clothing, game day or not. This puffy coat is the perfect shade of blue, and has a sporty vibe that’s perfect for a hockey game. Throw it all over a white-out-ready white tshirt, and finish off the look with heeled Artica boots (so courtside-Rihanna) for a chic-but-comfy footwear option.

Festival du Voyageur
Hé ho! This quintessential Manitoban celebration is packed with family fun during the day and transforms into a hip destination at night, attracting DJs and a who’s who of local musicians. You’ll know what we’re talking about if you’re a committed Festival-goer, and you’ll also know how important it is to stay covered up – especially if you end up at the back of a long line. Since wearing a ceinture fléchée around your waist is the norm here, don’t be afraid to go all out with your Festival look. Reach for voyageur-inspired pieces like a faux fur hat, iconic Hudson’s Bay striped scarf, and beautiful Manitobah Mukluks. Balance these cultural nods with feminine, modern pieces like this gorgeous peplum coat, figure-flattering dark denim, and soft leather gloves to feel festive, without feeling like you’re wearing a costume. You’ll keep toasty warm, even as you sip Caribou out of an ice glass!

RAW:almond
Touted as the ‘coolest culinary event’ of the year, RAW:almond is definitely an experience that you need to have in your lifetime. Chefs from across the country bring their A-game to this outdoor pop-up restaurant, serving delicious five-course meals under a swanky tent at The Forks. If you were lucky enough to snag a ticket, this is a great opportunity to really have fun with winter styling. When it comes to dining outside, layering is key. We found a sleek, down-filled leather parka and paired it with a chunky turtleneck to keep warm, while still looking dressy enough for the occasion. Tall boots layered over jeans add extra leg insulation and will offset the bulkiness of the parka. Finish off the look with a funky fur hat and red handbag for a fresh pop of colour. Be prepared to get more than a few double takes!
