Anatomy of an Outfit: NYFW Street Style

fashion

When it comes to style inspiration, there’s no shortage from magazines, starlets, bloggers, models, and the street style of Fashion Week (shown here!). When we saw mega-blogger Chiara Ferragni of The Blonde Salad snapped on the streets of New York, we pinned it instantly. This fabulous street style look is perfectly proportioned to mix and match your well-loved closet pieces for the transition to warmer weather. So how can you recreate this look for yourself? We break down the elements and show you how!

The elements: Casual mini-dress + cropped jacket + tall boots + cool girl extras

Casual mini-dress: Keep it simple and relaxed with a loose-fitting, casual mini-dress that hits somewhere above the knee. Anything longer will enter into matronly territory and throw off the look’s balance.

Cropped jacket: Instinct is usually to pair dresses or skirts with a jacket that covers the hem (traditional way of thinking!), but when the jacket is deliberately cropped it creates an unevenness that somehow works. Even the bracelet sleeves on our version of the jacket add another unique dimension to all the different lengths.

Tall boots: You want the boots to reach at least the knee, or even a touch higher. This adds coverage to the legs in the fluctuating temperatures, while still showing a touch of skin for spring.

Cool girl extras: Adding a chic pair of sunnies, a slouchy carryall bag, and fresh half-topknot keep it all feeling deliberately thrown-together and effortless.

Why it works: Mini, cropped, tall…each piece hits at a different spot on the body, giving the illusion of rich, layered textures. By clearly defining the space between each layer, the look achieves perfect style symmetry – all by pairing elements we already own in a fresh, new way!
