Overalls are back – here’s how to style them for 2014

In 2013, the maxi dress ruled. This year, overalls are the must-have one-piece.

“They will be a staple for spring/summer fashion, and in many styles to suit different body types,” says stylist and fashion director Allana Schmidt.

That's right, ladies - everyone from curvy girls to straighter silhouettes can rock this look.  And like the maxi dress (which is still on trend), overalls are easy to wear, comfortable, and a perfect way to express your personal style.

“Overalls are like a blank canvas to work with. It’s up to you if you want to use it for a casual look or something more chic and fun,” Schmidt says. Our fresh take pairs overall shorts with an unexpected crisp white button down.

“Collared shirts for non-work attire is huge for Spring,” she says. “It’s a classy piece that can still be accessorized to look fun and flirty without revealing too much.”

A sporty rust-orange jacket adds a jolt of colour and warmth for those unpredictable spring days. With its zippers, breast pockets and gold-snap epaulets, the jacket’s military groove is a carryover from previous seasons. This year, luxe and soft fabrics replace stiff denims and other cottons that previously dominated the style. While we opted for high-impact orange, military matte shades like navy blue and army greens will also be big this season. Think of these colours as dark neutrals and use them to tie together your summer pieces to create a complete look, Schmidt recommends.

It's fashion 101 to balance out menswear and military-inspired pieces with a bit of girly glam; we've done so here with a super feminine cut-out heel. The camo green is in sync with the military vibe - but definitely isn't blending in.

In the accessories department, earthy elements like braided metals, leather and stones rule for both women- and menswear this year, Schmidt notes. We brought the wow factor with a statement necklace of braided gold accented with stones in ocean-inspired hues of turquoise and aquamarine and paired it with bohemian silk thread bracelets in the same colour family.
