To rethink the cardigan, we stopped by Ricki’s to pick up our favourite basic in two shades, and styled them to be worn as a shirt for a completely new level of appreciation. Here’s how a cardigan can do so much more than just keep you warm.

With tailored trousers

One way to wear a cardigan that you might not expect is under another layer – tuck a black cardigan into a pair of cropped high-waisted trousers, then add a perfect, classic blazer. While a cardigan tends to be worn as a final layer, this is a more edgy way to style it that has a menswear-inspired bent. A black-on-black-on-black outfit is the perfect time to go all-out with your accessories – try mirrored gold platform sneakers and a textured oversized clutch to inject some major personality.

With a formal skirt

When you’re wearing a formal skirt, it’s natural to reach for an equally dressy top, but a cardigan is an unexpected option that looks feminine and sophisticated, and just a little more cool and casual. The trick is to wear a smaller size that is more formfitting. The hem of the cardigan will be tucked into the waistband of the skirt, so choose one that is not super long, to avoid bulk. Starting with this simple grey cardigan allows you to incorporate other patterns and add textures to create more interest in the look – a pair of suede heels in dusty rose perfectly plays up the romantic florals in the skirt.
