The New Way to Wear Stripes

fashion

No matter the year or the season, it’s safe to assume that stripes are going to be in style. This versatile pattern was especially prominent on the Spring ‘17 runways, and the fashion masterminds were right, because stripes are all we want to wear right now! We know this style mainstay isn’t exactly a new trend, but the magic lies in the styling. To keep things fresh, we’re sharing some tips on how to get creative and wear stripes in new, unexpected ways.

As far as we’re concerned, the most interesting way to wear stripes is to pair them with other patterns. In fact, according to Spark stylist Casey Downes, an easy styling trick is to treat your stripes like a solid, replacing basics with something more interesting. If you’re dressing for work, swap out your tired black jacket for a striped blazer. Pairing stripes with a checked pant is an interesting approach that feels quirky and fashion-forward, especially for a workday. In this case, a monochromatic palette unifies the two patterns and keeps things on the more subtle side.

Horizontal stripes tend to get a bad rep, but that fashion ‘rule’ is outdated, and shouldn’t hold you back. When choosing all-over stripes that go in the same direction, try incorporating a bright pop of colour to break up the stripes. We chose a bright yellow purse and a polka dot scarf to make the outfit feel playful.

Both a unified colour palette and strategic colour blocking can also be used when mixing stripes with a much bolder pattern. A black-and-white striped turtleneck is a great match for this bold mini-skirt because it contains the same colours. Blocking in a solid black vest is a nice way break up the stripes, and keep the overall look from feeling too busy. Since there’s a lot going on here, nude slip-on mules are the perfect compliment. Remember that a chunkier heel can help to balance a form-fitting miniskirt, for a more modern and fashion-forward approach.

In the end, pattern mixing is all about fun and experimentation, so wear it with confidence and you can’t go wrong! Looking for more on Spring 2017’s biggest trends? Check our story on styling slogan tees.
