3 Ways To Style The Perfect Parka

fashion

Living in Winnipeg, we don’t have the luxury of choosing a winter jacket based on style alone. As much as we’d love to wear a sleek trench or peacoat all season, -40 degree weather makes that dream virtually impossible. So, we embarked on the hunt to find a versatile parka that will keep us warm, but still as chic as possible. Luckily, we managed to find one that looks incredible, AND meets our functional needs. So what to look for in the perfect parka? “The beige colour is a huge plus,” says Spark stylist, Casey Downes. “It’s more unexpected than black, and can easily be dressed up or down.” The cinched waist, faux-fur, and removable hood are even more reasons to love it.

Here are a few tips on how to style the perfect parka for all your winter stops:

Where to wear it: Skating at The Forks
Why it works: The great thing about the neutral shade of this parka is that it pairs well with almost every colour and pattern. Plus, it's lined with cozy faux-fur that will keep you warm and comfortable, even while you’re outdoors for long periods of time. Look for a parka that hits just above the knee for a little extra protection from the elements, without sacrificing mobility. A fur-trimmed hood goes a long way to keeping the winter wind off your face.
How to style: Take on the chilly temps with your favourite skinny jeans (these will also help to balance the volume of the parka), a roomy tote bag, and waterproof, quilted Hunter boots. Now’s the time to get playful with a fun, colourful toque. Details like this will instantly inject some vibrancy into the look, and pop against the neutral base of the parka. Cozy knit accessories are a pretty (and necessary!) winter touch.

Where to wear it: To work
Why it works: You won’t have to worry about being underdressed at a client meeting when you show up wearing this coat. The luxe-feeling fabric brings a level of sophistication to your outerwear, and the drawstring allows you to create a cinched waist that feels tailored and office-appropriate.
How to style: Want to look like the chicest girl at the office? Sleek and grown-up is the name of the game. Try pairing your parka with classic, structured accessories. A red beret will keep you warm, but is more office-ready than a casual toque. A boxy, colour-blocked bag is just the thing for stashing your notebook or laptop. Moss green pumps are a touch unexpected, and dark tights are both practical and professional.

Where to wear it: To a holiday party
Why it works: When you show up to a glamorous holiday party, the last thing you want is to look like George Constanza in Gore-Tex. This parka is a much subtler option that will let your festive outfit do the talking. A removable hood can really switch up the look of a parka, and is a huge asset to the versatility of your winter outerwear. When you know you won’t be outside for long, removing the hood can make a parka feel sleeker and more like a trench, especially if it has tailored details and a sophisticated palette like this one.
How to style: What better time of year to play with sparkly details and luxurious fabrics? Take advantage by opting for things that feel special, like sequins, soft leather, rich jewel tones, and a bright, mistletoe-friendly lip. Make sure that even your cold-weather accessories feel festive and dressed-up by choosing pieces like a jewelled headband, fur-trimmed leather gloves, and a cowl neck scarf, and you’ll further elevate the parka to something more than just a winter necessity.
